AWN Livestock & Property Wimmera, Horsham Livestock Report, by Ash Driscoll – 28 May, 2025

An absolutely unbelievable day here at Horsham. We saw prices skyrocket, with our own sale achieving a remarkable top price of $403.00 for prime lambs. This outstanding result was for an estimated 36.5-kilo lamb, pushing the p/kg price to an incredible $11.00. While another regional sale in Warracknabeal reached $410, our Horsham sale firmly established itself with an exceptional top offering. We’re eager to see how long this incredible run for lamb prices will last.

Heavy lambs today were truly in a league of their own. Prices, which ranged from $11 p/kg soared up to $11.67, making them a stunning $60 to $80 dearer than last week’s market. This incredible chain of events has been building all week, driven by short supplies among processors. Heavy lambs, especially those weighing over 30 kg, consistently commanded $11-plus p/kg, an exceptional outcome for these sought-after animals.

Moving slightly down, heavy trade and trade lambs also saw fantastic returns, generally sitting in the $10 to $11 p/kg range. While quality and skin type played a role, with some touching $10.80 to $11, a broad overview puts these lambs firmly in the $10 to $11 bracket. The AWN Team delivered an exceptional run of lambs, with trade types seeing at least a $20 to $30 per head increase.

Light trade and firmer types also responded well to the strong demand. Anything with good shape and cover fetched between $9.50 and $10.50 p/kg. Feeder lambs, for those looking to put them back on feed, were in the $4.20 to $4.50 range. A significant number of these lambs were on offer and perfectly suited the job. Processors were also actively competing for these weights.

Good merino lambs, particularly those weighing over 20 kg, were in high demand, reaching at least $9 to $9.50 p/kg for the better types. This represented at least a $15 to $20 per head improvement from last week, if not more in some spots. The only slight dip in today’s lamb market was for lighter merinos under 18 kg, particularly those lacking cover and quality. Most of these fell into the $7.50 to $8 p/kg category, or slightly more. The feeder job for these lighter merinos saw them selling for $90 to $120 to be put back on feed, hovering around $3 to $3.20 p/kg.

Mutton continued its fantastic run! We saw a top price of $230 for some merino ewes with good skins. Although not exceptionally heavy, these ewes weighed at least 27 kg and sold for around $7.40 to $7.50 p/kg. Heavy sheep overall commanded $6.50 to $7.50, representing a significant $30 to $40 per head increase from last week. It’s truly amazing what a week can do in this business.

Trade sheep weren’t quite as dear, generally sitting at $6 to $6.50 p/kg, perhaps a tick more in spots at $6.80. Most were within that $6 to $6.50 range. Lighter sheep under 16 kg were around the $4.50 p/kg category, while those between 16 and 20 kg still saw good returns of $5.50 to $6 p/kg. The mutton market saw a very good response across the board.

We eagerly await what the next couple of weeks bring as we head into the weaning period. But for today, a massive congratulations to the Klinge family for their exceptional quality lambs, which achieved our top price at the time of $403!

Let’s see what the coming days hold. This incredible price may hold its own and could set a new benchmark for Horsham Saleyards. It might even become a national record.
