Damien’s journey, spanning almost five decades, four locations, two states, and three agencies, is a testament to his dedication and deep connection to the agricultural industry.

Damien’s farewell event was a heartening occasion, marked by friendship and camaraderie. Surrounded by family, friends, clients, and the dedicated AWN Wimmera team, the atmosphere truly reflected the high esteem in which Damien is held.

As Damien himself noted: “You’ve got to have a good team and support behind you to be able to do the best by your clients” – a guiding principle that has clearly defined his successful career.

Damien himself offered a glimpse into the challenges and rewards of his early career, recounting how a cousin in the industry helped him land his first job in Myrtleford.

Reflecting on his transfer to Albury, he shared, “I enjoyed my time in Albury.” Weekly cattle sales were held, and fortnightly sheep sales took place at Corowa. These experiences contributed to Damien’s knowledge and understanding of the livestock industry.

Wayne Driscoll, AWN Wimmera’s area manager, during a heartfelt speech, took the opportunity to reminisce about Damien’s early days. Recalling his move to Hay, Wayne shared Damien’s initial apprehension about leaving the “green, rolling hills of the northeast” for a “flatter and drier” landscape.

However, Damien quickly adapted with the opportunity to be able to go onto the renowned sheep studs and stations with large woolsheds in action. The time spent in the Riverina gave Damien a great insight into the merino industry, which held him in good stead for the future. This adaptability and open-mindedness have been hallmarks of his long tenure.

During the 1982 drought, Damien was transferred to Wycheproof, a challenging time for the small rural community. The drought broke in March 1982. Damien and his manager, Jim Coffey, travelled to New South Wales and South Australia, restocking the Wycheproof area.

After getting married in 1985, Damien moved to Stawell with his wife, Kerryn. His arrival in Stawell marked the beginning of another significant chapter in his career, one that he remained in for 40 years.

The area was well known for its merino sheep. At the time, the wool industry was the predominant agricultural industry, with wool sales being a regular event. In later years, the area transitioned to prime lambs and cropping.

The Callawadda sale was a feature every year, with yarding of the local breeders’ quality merino sheep. The area is known for its well-bred sheep, and as an agent, you were proud to yard them and sell with confidence.

Greg Reading, speaking on behalf of Damien’s clients, emphasised Damien’s professional integrity and the immense distances travelled in service of the community, estimated between two and three million kilometres. He lauded Damien’s ability to secure buyers and his profound impact on the quality of local stock.

Through the years, Damien’s commitment never wavered, even through industry shifts and agency transitions. As Wayne acknowledged, the loyalty of Damien’s clients through these changes speaks volumes about his character and the trust he has built.

A large group of 150 people (family and friends) gathered indoors at Damien Harrington's retirement party, hosted by AWN Wimmera Livestock and Property.

As Damien embarks on his retirement, the overwhelming sentiment is one of gratitude and well wishes. His 48 years of dedication have left an incredible mark on the livestock industry and the Stawell community.

The warmth and unity expressed at his farewell underscore the profound respect he has earned. We join in celebrating a true stalwart and wish Damien a happy and fulfilling next chapter.
