George Gatenby along with his partner Laura and father Peter operate Bicton in the Midlands of Tasmania and run 7,500 merino sheep. George is the 8th generation to farm the property since Tasmanian European settlement in 1823.
George said farming sheep and wool fits in with the natural environment he lives in. “I love knowing that our farm provides comfortable and stylish wool for thousands of people to wear while not degenerating the environment it is produced in. It is also rewarding to know we can pass the property on to the next generation in equal or better condition than how it was received.”
Q. What does it mean to you to know who is wearing your wool?
A. It’s rewarding to think that a product that we work so hard to produce is providing comfort and style to someone’s life. To think that our wool is valued and appreciated by people in their everyday lives is very gratifying.
Q. What would you like to say to the person wearing your wool?
A. By wearing our wool you are becoming part of a story that spans over 200 years. The wool garment you wear is sustainable and should give you peace of mind that you are doing your part in providing a great environment for the next generation.
