AWN, formerly known as Australian Wool Network, has successfully landed a generous donation of more than $27,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) following the auction of nine bales of specially selected wool at selling centres across the nation last week.
More than $240,000 has been raised for the charity through these auctions, thanks to a relationship between AWN and the RFDS, which now spans 19 years.
Each year, in the final selling week of the season, AWN donates the proceeds from these bales to support the vital service the RFDS provides across rural and remote Australia, which helps reduce the disparity of health service access in these areas.

In a fantastic nationwide effort, two bales sold in Sydney made $9,500.40, two bales in Melbourne sold for $6,912.50, AWN Fremantle sold three bales totalling $5,612.64 and Dyson Jones Fremantle sold two bales which returned $5,300 for a total of $27,325.54.
Southern NSW Wool Technical Officer and Auctioneer, Cassie Baile, said it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to sell on behalf of the RFDS.
“We offered two bales of 16-micron wool which had been specially selected from the NSW rehandle,’’ she said.
“There was good support for the line between multiple buyers with the successful bidder being Endeavour Wool at 2520c greasy.”
“These finer wools have been selling really well and it was great to see the support for these charity bales. Endeavour Wool, along with Techwool Trading, have been among our strongest buyers and greatest supporters of our charity efforts and we are very grateful to everyone who assists us to continue our work in this area.”
Victorian Wool Technical Manager and Senior Auctioneer, Jeff Denny, sold two bales of 17.7-micron wool to Stephen Bryce who was purchasing on behalf of PJ Morris.
“The trade rallied to the room to witness the auction and the bales were knocked down for 1750c greasy,’’ he said.
“I called a high price on the valuation and the buyer came in. Thanks to all those who have supported these charity auctions over the years to ensure they are successful,’’ Mr Denny said.
Endeavour Wool, the second largest exporter of Australian wool, came to the fore once again in Western Australia where AWN offered three bales of 18.7-micron wool with a yield of 60.7 and length of 91mm.
AWN Western Australia Wool Manager, Greg Tilbrook, said there was good support in the auction room with the bidding reaching 1120c.
“Endeavour Wool buyer Steve Noa was very happy with the result. The RFDS is a very appropriate charity for us to support as it supports country people,’’ said Greg.
Once again there was good competition when Western Australian-based Dyson Jones offered two 15.3-micron bales.
Regional Manager, Peter Howie, said the two superfine bales reached 2000c greasy and returned $5300.
“There was good competition and with these wools doing well in the marketplace, there was good support,’’ he said.
RFDS South Eastern Section Chief Medical Officer Randall Greenberg said as a charitable organisation, the RFDS relied on community donations.
“These donations help us to continue delivering vital health care services to people across the outback, including mental health, primary healthcare and life-saving emergency medical retrievals,’’ he said.
“So, every dollar raised from the AWN charity auctions will have a positive impact on the communities and the people who rely so heavily on the Flying Doctor.’’
