Sawers Farms Pty Ltd, Wilkatana Station, Port Augusta
Wilkatana has been in the Sawers family for 110 years. The property is 500 square kms in size and home to some 6,500 merino sheep, 130 bird species and an abundance of kangaroos and emus. The diverse and dramatic landscape ranging from open native grasslands to sand hills and even a salt lake provides a unique and special environment in which to grow modern merino wool.
We love being able to grow a naturally grown fibre with all of its associated benefits in a truly unique and natural environment.
The property has been run by numerous farm managers but our current manager, Andrew Smart, has been running the property now for 32 years. Andrew and his wife Rachel in addition to farm management, also run the Wilkatana Station tourism venture, utilising existing shearers quarters for accommodation and offering visitors an opportunity to visit a working sheep station.
Q. What does it mean to you to know who is wearing your wool?
A. To see a person wearing a garment made from the raw product that we produced is extremely rewarding.
