The 94th International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) Congress, held in Lille, France, from 20-22 May 2025, brought together the global wool industry under the theme “Weaving a Perfect Fit between Past & Present.” This significant event welcomed 286 participants from 28 countries, fostering crucial dialogue in a city renowned for its textile heritage.
AWN was proudly represented by Chairman, John Colley, and Wool Technical Officer, Tamara Pabst. Tamara’s attendance was a direct result of her winning the 2024 National Council of Wool Selling Brokers of Australia (NCWSBA) Wool Broker Award, which included a trip to the IWTO Congress. This opportunity allowed her to connect with professionals across the wool supply chain and gain a deeper understanding of the industry’s global challenges and opportunities.
Tamara shared her insights from the Congress, noting that while there were discussions on challenges, the overall tone was far from negative.
“IWTO was very interesting to hear about the successes and challenges that many are facing around the world at the moment,” she stated, adding, “it wasn’t all doom and gloom.”
Tamara underscored the prevalence of innovation and innovators, particularly young people who are passionate about the industry. A significant highlight for her was the Young Professionals Program.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Young Professionals Program. It provided opportunities to connect with experienced mentors and a variety of people in the wool industry, as well as with many passionate, like-minded young people who see a promising future in wool.”
John Colley, AWN’s Chairman, spoke highly of Tamara’s contributions and future in the industry.
“Tamara showed all the attributes you would expect from a person who won the NCWSBA Young Woolbroker of the year award. Her passion for the wool industry came to the fore in many of the meetings, and her input and knowledge of “on ground” wool grower needs shone through.
Her time in Italy, shared with the world’s leading weavers, was invaluable. She will draw on this experience for years to come, and the knowledge she has obtained will help add value to the woolgrowers in Australia. Tamara has the passion and the drive to make a difference in the industry, and I look forward to watching her progress in the years to come.”
Sustainability was a pervasive theme throughout the Congress, with discussions across the entire supply chain reaffirming its continued focus within the industry.
Prior to the Congress, Tamara spent a week in Biella, Italy, with John Colley, Brett Cooper, Brett’s wife, Kim, and Tamara’s partner, Stuart, undertaking Wool Mill Tours. This immersive experience provided invaluable learning.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Biella; it was inspiring to meet people who have dedicated their entire lives to the wool industry. Their passion and commitment were truly evident. Seeing the full process—from scouring and combing to spinning, weaving, and finishing was incredible. The level of investment in infrastructure is impressive and a strong reminder that this industry is here to stay.”
AWN’s active involvement in events like the IWTO Congress reinforces its position as a key player in the wool industry. By engaging with global leaders and fostering connections across the supply chain, AWN continues its commitment to promoting a sustainable future for wool and serving as trusted wool marketing specialists.
